Over the last few months my social feeds have been filled with gorgeous Mahjong setups — colorful tiles, acrylic racks, chic mats, and stylish bags. And if you’ve recently started learning American Mahjong like I have, you know how quickly the accessories start calling your name.
So yes… I have a confession to make.
I may have spent a little money on Mahjong supplies lately.
But honestly? Every piece is so pretty and so much fun to play with that I have zero regrets. And as a beginner, I’m discovering what I actually like while building a setup that makes me excited to sit down and practice.
Here’s a peek at the Mahjong goodies I’ve picked up so far — including a few that are quickly becoming favorites.
My First Mahjong Set (Amazon Find)
Like many beginners, I started by looking for a more affordable Mahjong set before diving into the boutique options filling my Instagram feed.
After some searching, I landed on this 160 piece pink engraved American Mahjong Game Set with Carrying Bag and Accessories for around $100.
To go with it, I also grabbed some multicolor racks from Amazon for just under $30.
The tiles are genuinely adorable. The set has a cute travel theme, and the colors are bright and cheerful — exactly the kind of setup that makes learning Mahjong feel fun instead of intimidating.
One small reality check though: despite the travel theme, the set weighs almost 9 pounds on my kitchen scale, so it’s definitely not ideal for a carry-on only traveler like me.
Still, for a beginner Mahjong set, it’s a great place to start.
Adding a Mahjong Mat
Once I had tiles, I quickly realized something else was missing — a mat.
A mat makes reading the tiles easier and prevents sliding, and it also instantly elevates the look of your table.
I chose the Pink Blooms Mahjong Mat for about $34 because it paired beautifully with the pink tile set and felt like a budget-friendly option while I was still learning.
Falling in Love with My Fair Mahjong
You might think I stopped there.
Nope.
After a lot of browsing (and a little Instagram influence), I found myself deciding between Oh My Mahjong and My Fair Mahjong for my first “splurge” Mahjong purchase.
Ultimately I chose My Fair Mahjong - and wow, I’m so glad I did.
Crystal Confetti Purple Mahjong Tiles
For tiles, I chose the Crystal Confetti Purple set ($365).
What sold me immediately:
The gorgeous purple circular pattern on the backs
Layered purple acrylic tile edges
Bright, colorful tile faces that are still very easy to read
They are beautifully made and have a nice chunky feel that makes them incredibly satisfying to play with.
Matching Mat and Racks
To complete the setup I added:
The acrylic racks might actually be my favorite piece in the entire order. They feel much sturdier and more substantial than the racks I bought on Amazon and the ones I’ve used during lessons and open play.
And of course the tiles fit the racks perfectly — as they should since they’re from the same brand.
Opening this package honestly felt like Christmas morning.
Practicing at Home with a Solo Mahjong Board
You’d think I’d stop there, right?
Also no.
I kept hearing from both friends and online Mahjong groups that practice is key, especially when you’re new and still learning to read the card quickly.
So after seeing a few Instagram videos, I ordered a Solo Mahj board from Solomahj.com.
I chose the Clover board in pink ($80) so I could practice hands on my own.
And it works!
I played a couple solo games on Friday night before heading out to dinner with a friend and actually Mahjonged on my second game.
Since then I’ve been sitting down every few hours for another quick solo round. I didn’t Mahjong on Saturday, but I can already tell I’m getting faster at recognizing tiles and making decisions.
The Perfect Mahjong Bag (Also From My Fair Mahjong)
At this point I thought I was finished buying Mahjong accessories.
But then I realized the Amazon bag set I ordered wasn’t really my style.
So naturally I ended up back on the My Fair Mahjong website.
This time I ordered:

And after checkout they offered Mahjong Shuffling Cards for $4 each (normally $8), so of course I grabbed two.
One of the best parts?
My Fair Mahjong is local to the DFW area.
I placed my order around 10:30 AM Friday and it arrived by noon Saturday. That kind of turnaround is impressive.
The tote bag is gorgeous and fits perfectly with the rest of my setup — and I can’t wait to bring it to my next Mahjong night with friends.
What’s Next for My Mahjong Collection?
Okay… now I’m probably done buying Mahjong supplies for a while.
But if I’m being honest, I’ve already started looking at travel Mahjong sets for future trips.
Because once Mahjong gets into your life… it kind of takes over in the most delightful way.
