For my mom’s birthday this week, we decided to go all in on a resort splurge: one of the Pier Cabanas at Hyatt Ziva Cancun.
Not a regular pool cabana. Not a beach cabana. The Pier Cabana.

There are only two of them, and they sit out over the water with direct stairs into the ocean. It felt like the kind of thing you look at all week and wonder, “Who gets to sit there?” For one very special birthday day, the answer was us.
And honestly? It was lovely.
How much does the Hyatt Ziva Cancun Pier Cabana cost?
According to the Hyatt Ziva app during our stay, the standard rate for the Pier Cabana was $8,780 MXN, which worked out to around $500 USD depending on the exchange rate.
We also left about $100 USD in tips throughout the day for the cabana host and servers.
That is absolutely a splurge. But for our group of seven — five adults and two children — the cost felt more reasonable when shared across the group, especially because it became our home base for the whole birthday day.
For comparison, my mom and her boyfriend booked one of the regular poolside cabanas later in the trip for $3,380 MXN, which was much less expensive and much closer to the pool and bathrooms. But it was also smaller and much more dependent on the sun angle for shade.
What was included with the Pier Cabana?
The Hyatt Ziva app listed the Pier Cabana as including:
- Pool concierge
- Four welcome refreshments
- Four refreshing facials
- Drink service from 10 AM to 6 PM
- Food service from 12 PM to 4 PM
Our actual experience included a cabana host, food and beverage service, four coconuts, four short refreshing facials, and a mini fridge that stayed well stocked with drinks. The cabana host also kept us supplied with dry towels all day, which sounds small until you are going in and out of the ocean and suddenly realize how nice it is to always have a fresh towel waiting.

Inside the covered part of the cabana, we had a big round chair and two lounge chairs. Down a few steps in the uncovered section, there were two more lounge chairs, plus steps directly into the water.
The setup worked really well for our group because not everyone was in the cabana at the same time except when we were eating.
Booking the Pier Cabana
My brother and sister-in-law were staying in a room with a butler, so they reserved the Pier Cabana through him.
You can also reserve cabanas through the Hyatt Inclusive Collection app or by talking to the hosts in the Club Tower. Hyatt’s public FAQ also says cabanas can be reserved through concierge, though I did not find the Pier Cabana pricing published on the public Hyatt site.
If this is something you know you want, I would not wait until the last minute. There are only two Pier Cabanas, and for a birthday, anniversary, or big family day, it is the kind of thing worth planning ahead.
The birthday touches made it feel extra special
We rented the cabana on my mom’s actual birthday, and the resort team made it feel special from the start.
The concierge hosts added balloons to all four corners of the cabana. Then the Club Tower hosts hand delivered a birthday bag and a reusable Ziva tumbler for my mom.
Was the cabana already beautiful? Yes.
Did the balloons and personal delivery make it feel more like a birthday moment? Also yes.
My mom loved every second of it. But to be fair, she was mostly happy that we were all together. The cabana just gave us a really special place to gather.
What made the Pier Cabana worth it
The biggest thing for me was the shade.
I am perpetually pale, and this was hands down the best shade I had the entire trip. The covered cabana stayed shaded throughout the day, unlike pool umbrellas that can become less useful as the sun moves.
There was also a ceiling fan that kept the air moving, plus a really nice breeze coming off the water. It felt private, comfortable, and much more relaxing than trying to chase shade around the pool deck.

The direct ocean access was another major perk. Being able to walk down the steps right into the water made the whole setup feel special. You could swim, come back up, grab a drink, dry off, and settle back into the shade. We did notice however the steps in the actual water were quite slippery and at one point mom's boyfriend slide down and twisted one of his ankles - even knowing it was slippery and being careful it still got him!
Food and drink service
The Pier Cabana had a slightly different menu than the regular cabanas. It included options from Habaneros and Lorenzo’s, so we had access to seafood and pizza options along with the regular cabana menu.
Food service ran from 12 PM to 4 PM, and drink service ran from 10 AM to 6 PM.

Having everything come to us was one of the best parts. On a resort day, especially with a group, there is something really nice about not constantly coordinating who is hungry, who wants to go get food, who is staying with the bags, and where everyone is meeting back up.
The cabana solved that.

The one downside
The biggest downside was other guests in the water.
Because the cabana sits over the ocean with stairs down into the water, people kept swimming up to our stairs, hanging out there, and taking pictures. I do not think they understood that the cabana was rented private space, but when you have paid a lot of money for the day, it is frustrating to have people using the stairs like a public photo spot.
That was really the only part that took away from the experience.
The other practical downside: bathrooms were not close. The cabana was super convenient for the ocean and still only a short walk back to the pools, but it was definitely a walk if you needed the restroom.
Pier Cabana vs. regular pool cabana
After our Pier Cabana day, my mom and her boyfriend booked a regular poolside cabana for $3,380 MXN.
That option put them right by the pool and much closer to bathrooms. It was also significantly less expensive. But it was much smaller, and the shade depended heavily on the angle of the sun. They started the day in full sun and only got better shade once the sun rose higher.
So which one is better?
For a milestone day, birthday, or larger group splitting the cost, I think the Pier Cabana is the more memorable experience.
For a couple or smaller group who mainly wants pool convenience, closer bathrooms, and a lower price point, the regular pool cabana could be a better value, especially if you can choose one with good shade orientation.
Would I book the Hyatt Ziva Cancun Pier Cabana again?
With a big group splitting the cost, yes.
It is expensive, but it gave us a private, shaded, over-the-water home base for the day. For my mom’s birthday, it felt like a true vacation splurge and made the day feel special without needing to leave the resort or plan anything complicated.
I would especially recommend it for:
- Milestone birthdays
- Multi-generational family trips
- Groups who can split the cost
- Anyone who wants reliable shade
- Guests who want a quieter ocean-focused day instead of a pool-focused day
I would not recommend it as strongly for someone who needs to be close to bathrooms, wants to be right in the pool scene, or would be annoyed by people swimming near the cabana stairs.
For us, though, it was a beautiful birthday splurge. My mom loved it, we had the best shade of the trip, and it gave us one of those vacation days we will actually remember.
Final verdict
The Hyatt Ziva Cancun Pier Cabana is not cheap. At $8,780 MXN, plus tips, it is a real add-on expense.
But for a special occasion and a group that can share the cost, I think it can be absolutely worth it.
Just know what you are paying for: shade, service, direct ocean access, privacy, and a memorable setting. And maybe be prepared for a few confused swimmers who think your private cabana stairs are part of the resort photo tour.
